essay plan 2

"The audience may know what to expect but are still exited by genre text" to what extent is this true?

Introduction: It can be argued that the audience know what to expect in different genre text although some codes and conventions have to change to reflect the zeitgeist so the audience can have many pleasures. Steve Neale 1980 states that "the difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre."

Theory to mention:
Cultivation theory , what the audience expect i.e. slasher films need to be more graffic due to the audience being desensitized. Some changes need to occur for them to get different sorts of pleasure e.g. sadistic, massacistic, and viceral pleasures.

Uses and gratifications theory, the audience choose what type of text they want to watch.

Reception theory: They create their own reading and response when they watch a genre text.

quote:
james monaco 1979"increasingly we are going to watch the same 10 movies"
It's true because all slasher films have similar narative structure/template, phalic symbols, teenage group, final girl, inaficient authority figures.
It isn't true because: Post modern text make intertextual references , audience are desensitized, final girl more resourceful, variations in remake films, and censorships in socienty.
