How and why has the role of women being super heroes become more frequent with reference to “Cat woman”?
My independent study is going to be about how woman super heroes are becoming more frequent and not only men are having the roles of being super heroes. The films that are being released of comic book heroes are showing women to be more independent, they are not following the role of being damsels in distress and relying on men to protect them. This is probably to have a mass audience mainly targeting females as action genre films usually target men.
Media language: the types of shots that are used so the audience can identify with the character e.g. low angles shot of cat woman, which may represent her importance and superiority in the film.
Institution: Warner brothers produce most of the comic book films.
Genre: action
Representation: how women are taking more dominant roles in films e.g. cat women being the protagonist.
Audience: how more women are being targeted to watch actions films but also men being targeted.
Ideology and Values: active and passive role for men and women, feminism and patriarchal societies, male gaze and damsels in distress, stereotypes, hegemony, and misogyny.
Narrative: how comic book films always have an equilibrium, disequilibrium, and resolution.
Social context: there is less censorship in the media e.g. woman may be shown sexually so the film can be sold.
Historical context: roles of women are more frequent they are not just a sexual object in films they have more importance then they did in previous films.
Economical context: action films have a high budget to make there special effects look good and authentic.
Political context: the morals of the story what messages it send to the audience.
The texts I can mention are: Superman, Batman, The Hulk, Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Electra, Lara Croft Tomb Rader and Wonder woman.
Theorist: Laura Mulvey for feminism, Propp for character roles, Todorov for narrative structure, and Andrea Dworkin for her theory about women being sexual objects to men and women being raped because men watch porn.
